Lazarus, Emma
The New Colossus is the Statue of Liberty, which Lazarus contrasts with the ancient Colossus of Rhodes (the brazen giant of Greek fame), one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
"This poem has become famous, as it is now inscribed on the Statue of Liberty's pedestal. It reflects pride in welcoming immigrants and encouraging them to seek their fortune in the land of opportunity" (The Immigrants 182).
